We are a cozy family run farm on an island off the coast of Maine. Horses have been a part of my life from the time I crawled into my father's horse pasture!! It was then that my family realized that I would keep crawling, walking, or running into pastures and there was no stopping me!!
I grew up taking English lessons and working at barns to take lessons, or just to be around the smell of horses! I participated in Pony Club and shows when it was possible. When I came to Vinalhaven in the summer I traveled to Hill and Dale Farm in Warren to take lessons. Shows and ribbons were not my focus, it was to be around horses and learn about them. Through middle school and high school I worked at a private barn in exchange for riding. Just being around the horses made me happy. College time came and my opportunities to ride were less than I wanted, but that never stopped the endless desire to learn all I could about these majestic creatures. While studying to be a physical education teacher, I always knew there was something missing in my life " A Horse" and I knew one day some how I would have one. After college I moved to Vinalhaven and continued to work on lobster boats, always dreaming away of having that horse.
Then one day the most amazing opportunity (in my eyes!!) happened. Someone was offering lessons on the island. I jumped at the chance to ride again and get back into the world of horses. After a few summers of taking daily lessons and training I was offered an amazing opportunity to take over the established lesson program on the island and move it and the two horses to my property. I had never been so excited and nervous at the same time. To be able to have horses and offer this to the island year round was a dream and it had come true! I would never be able to say thank you enough for this! Now I have 6 horses of my own and some full and part time boarders. I continue my training both on and off the island, I have worked with Sandra Beaulieu and Carolyn Rose of Isaac Royal Farm and continue to train with them and study Aspirant Technique that Carolyn has developed, I have worked with Natural Horse Trainer Chris Lombard and continue to use his techniques as well as others I have learned, I have studied and had training in the techniques of Mary Wanless and her philosophy of Ride With Your Mind and Rider Biomechanics, and I have studied others at clinics and events. I am an ARIA certified instructor, an Aspirant student trainer, and a member of NARHA and working on my certification. I am always looking for and working toward ways to learn for both my students and horses, the learning never stops. I host clinics at our farm to give the island horse community chances to learn more, without having to travel off the island. I am always looking for new things to learn in hopes that it will translate to my teaching in a positive way. My goal is to teach children and adults to ride and care for horses safely. This is the most important thing to me "safety first", and to instill confidence, independence and the drive to keep learning. My goal with my riders is to understand each of them as the individuals we all are and to tailor my teaching to each, so that they will be strong, confident, safe riders. My passion for horses is never ending and everyday I go to the barn I feel like a kid again. So come visit the farm whether you just want to pet the horses, or hopefully want to ride.
I would like to thank everybody who has made this dream come true without any of you the farm would not be what it is today. I would also like to thank my husband who is not necessarily a horse person!! He is most at home on the water on his lobster boat, but when he is on dry land he is always working on the farm, or helping with the horses in anyway he can. God Bless you all!! ~ Peace~
~To My Father who shared this dream with me I thank you and I miss you~
"Riding is a partnership. The horse lends you his strength, speed and grace, which are greater than yours. For your part you give him your guidance, intelligence and understanding, which are greater than his. Together you can achieve a richness that alone neither can." ~ Lucy Rees
There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man. ~Winston Churchill
